Even before you get started: Have a preparatory conversation with your potential advisor

The expectation about a PhD project might be quite different. To prevent later conflicts we invite you to talk with your advisor about your expectations and here about his/hers. We prepared a checklist, which each one of you should fill in separately and use as base for the talk. You don't need to address all the questions or maybe others arise.

First: Application at Doctoral Office of MNF

It is compulsory to apply to the doctoral office of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences before or at the start of your doctoral project. Please visit the Dean's office homepage and read all information carefully. There you will find all necessary documents to apply for the acceptance of your doctorate. Please note, I only accept electronic documents for my signature.

Second: CGSC registration

The registration at the CGSC is done by signature on the application form

1. If you are in a graduate programme or institution (like MPI, CGA, IMPRS, ITN, RTG, iRTG, etc.) let the application form signed first by the coordinator of this progrm before you send it to the CGSC coordinator.

2. Every doctoral candidate needs to have a supervision agreement. Please talk about the supervision agreement with your supervisor, fill it in accordingly and send it to the CGSC coordinator.

Third: Enrollment with the University

After being accepted, you need to get enrolled, It is obligatory to be enrolled over the whole time of your PhD project.

A docfile acoount will be created automatically after the enrollment.

Fourth: Chose a Thesis Advisory committee (TAC)

Each doctoral student chooses a thesis advisory committee (TAC) consisting of the supervisor and two further scientists independent of the supervisor, called mentors. We recommend that one mentor is from a field closely related to the doctoral research project and the other from a different field but with complementary expertise. One of the mentors needs to be at least an independent group leader.
