About the program

The Master of Science in Chemistry study program is totally renewed and accredited. It will start with the winter term 2024/25 at the University of Cologne and is the consecutive study program of the Bachelor's program in Chemistry. It is an interdisciplinary and research-oriented program, located at the interface between Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medicine and Physics. Students will acquire a strong background in Chemistry and its application in different research fields such as green energy, smart materials and innovative medical applications. The graduates will be enabled to follow many career paths both inside and outside of academia.

Application

The application platform opens annually from June 1st to July 15th (winter term) and from December 1st to January 15th (summer term)

International applicants require a preliminary document review (VPD) by uni-assist. As this process takes approximately 6–8 weeks, please start it soon enough before the application deadline. More details on the VPD process below.

Study program

You have completed a BSc program in Chemistry or similar AND your diploma/grades have been pre-reviewed and transferred to the German grading scale by uni-assist (takes 6-8 weeks). You therefore have a VPD to be uploaded.

Grade

Your VPD grade is at least 2.5.

Main emphasis of study

Candidates have to prove at least 12 credit points in the following areas:

  • Inorganic Chemistry and/or Analytical Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry and/or Biochemistry
  • Physical Chemistry and/or Theoretical Chemistry

at least a further 12 credit points in Fundamentals of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics and in total at least 60 credit points from Chemical modules.

Research orientation

To allow for research lab-based studies, we ask for a bachelor thesis or at least for an extended lab project report.

English

You can proof that your BSc program was taught in English OR you have a

  • TOEFL (Paper-based 580, Computer-based 237, Internet-based 93),
  • IELTS (average 6,5 - each single component 6,0),
  • Cambridge qualifications: B2 First (175),
  • TOEIC (listening: 460 – reading: 425 –speaking: 175) certificate.

**To apply for the Master's program before completing your Bachelor's degree, you need to show proof of earning at least 80% of the total credit points. Submit a Transcript of Records with a preliminary grade for the application. If admitted, you must finish your Bachelor's degree by September 30 for the winter term or March 31 for the summer term. Provide proof of completing any remaining exams by the next term's registration deadline (January/July). Failure to do so will invalidate your admission confirmation.

Register via uni-assist for a preliminary review (VPD). You do not need to select our master, instead go with "All Subject", but it is important to select the “University of Cologne”. The procedure takes 6-8 weeks.

Go to KLIPS, change to English (de/en button), follow the applicant account link. Enter your details and upload your documents:

Selecting Modules

Module selection takes place via KLIPS in the first week of the lecture period.

Students in their first semester are strongly encouraged to attend the Welcome Meeting before selecting modules. The date will be announced under "News and Events" at the top of this page.

Scientific Literacy (SL)

This module provides beginners in the master's program with essential scientific work skills that extend beyond those learned in the bachelor's program. In particular, aspects of scientific integrity, presenting, searching and handling of literature, handling of data, introduction to the most essential software, especially AI applications will be discussed and tried out. In addition, a three-week laboratory internship provides an opportunity to repeat and deepen familiar working techniques as well as to perform unfamiliar techniques for the first time. The module also serves as a group-building event where the first-year cohort can connect with their respective academic mentors, learn about specialization opportunities in the master's program, and network socially and professionally with other students or teaching assistants within and outside of the cohort.

Advanced Chemistry (A)

These modules feature lecturers from all main areas of chemistry—biochemistry, inorganic, macromolecular, organic, physical, and theoretical—who present core knowledge combined with cutting-edge research. You will learn, recapitulate, and deepen your understanding of modern chemistry. The modules convey general knowledge in advanced chemistry and prepare for the more specialized modules in the respective field. You need to choose two A-Modules.

Research Focus (RF)

Research Focus modules are interdisciplinary lecture series developed jointly by two or more faculty members from within and beyond the department. Each module brings together complementary areas of expertise to illuminate a current topic in chemistry from multiple perspectives. Depending on the semester, you might explore areas such as computational and theoretical chemistry, photochemistry and optics, analytical and atmospheric methods, materials and nanoscience, or the interface of chemistry with medicine and biology. The specific modules offered vary each semester.

Subject Modules (SM)

These lectures and laboratory courses are designed to extend your knowledge in a chosen research area, combining an 8-week practical component with theoretical training. You will also develop your skills in presenting and reporting scientific results, which form part of the prerequisites for the oral examination. Modules are offered each term in blocks and must be registered via KLIPS. It is recommended to complete them in the 2nd and 3rd term.

Registration will be confirmed via KLIPS at a fixed date after the registration period ends. Please note that although top priorities are assigned first, this cannot always be guaranteed.

Lab Modules (LM)

In the Chemistry Master of Science program, students complete two Lab Modules that provide hands-on research training in a current subfield of chemistry, such as bioorganic chemistry, catalysis, computational chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, mass spectrometry, or NMR and X-ray spectroscopy. Working independently under the guidance of an experienced researcher, students carry out an experimental project within a research group of the Department of Chemistry or, with approval, at an associated non-chemical research group or external institution such as Forschungszentrum Jülich. Each module combines a practical laboratory component with a seminar in which students present their research results, discuss relevant scientific literature, and are assessed through a written laboratory report and an oral presentation.

One of the two Lab Modules (LM2) additionally requires students to write a research proposal, in which they formulate an original research question, develop a working hypothesis, review the state of the literature, and outline a detailed research strategy with milestones and a realistic timeline. The proposal is presented and defended within the research group. This component builds essential skills in scientific project design, literature research, and academic writing, preparing students for the independent research work of the Master Thesis.

Master Thesis (MT)

The Master Thesis marks the culmination of the Chemistry Master of Science program: six months in which students work as independent researchers on a scientific question within a research group. Over the course of the thesis, students apply the skills and knowledge built throughout the program and contribute new findings to the field of chemistry. To start the thesis, students must have completed one A Module, the Scientific Literacy module, one Subject Module, and a total of 72 credit points, and must receive approval from the M.Sc. Chemistry Examination Committee.

Beyond the thesis itself, students share their work with the scientific community in a final colloquium, presenting and defending their results. Worth 30 credit points and a quarter of the final grade, the Master Thesis is the point where students show they can research and communicate as chemists, opening the door to a career in academia, industry, or beyond.

Most Chemistry Master's graduates go on to pursue a PhD, the majority directly within their department, building on established research relationships and ongoing projects. Those who choose to move to a different institution will find their degree well recognised across Germany and beyond. And for graduates ready to enter the workforce, a Master's in Chemistry is a strong foundation: the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, research institutes, and the public sector all actively seek the expertise that comes with an advanced degree in chemistry. Can't find Master of Chemistry in Uni Assist?

If you can't find the Master of Chemistry program at the University of Cologne in Uni Assist, select "All subjects" and make sure to choose "University of Cologne" specifically. This should help you proceed with your application.

Do I need to take an English language proficiency test if I completed my Bachelor's in English?

No, you don't need to take an English language proficiency test (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL) if you completed your Bachelor's degree in English. However, please upload a confirmation from your university to prove this.

How long does it take to receive an admission decision after submitting documents?

We will make a decision within two weeks after the deadline. This will give you sufficient time to apply for a visa, considering the potential delays in getting an appointment.

Is a 3-year Indian Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and Environmental Science eligible for application?

A 3-year Bachelor's degree from India may not be eligible for a full VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation, or Preliminary Documentation). However, we can consider your application if you can provide proof of sufficient credit points required for the program.

Can I submit individual semester mark sheets with total grades for VPD since my transcript doesn't show an overall grade?

No, you need to provide a document that shows an overall grade, even if it's not your final grade. This document must still meet the required grade criteria.

Can I apply without an APS certificate if I haven't completed my degree in time, and submit it later during enrollment?

Yes, you can apply with notarized copies of your transcript and other documents, and then submit your APS certificate, degree certificate, and final transcript during the enrollment process.

How do I submit my application documents?

Please create an account in Klips and apply online by uploading the required documents. Do not send documents by mail.

I don't have Biochemistry credits, but I have Organic Chemistry credits. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes, you can apply if you can prove 12 ECTS in either Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry.
