Advancement Award 2006

The summer fête 2006 formed the setting for the conferment of the Department of Chemistry's Advancement Award. Five contenders from all chemical institutes faced the jury in the well-attended Kurt-Alder lecture theatre and reported on the results of their diploma thesis or the first year of their dissertation, respectively, in a generally understandable way.

Sascha Nicklisch of the Institute of Biochemistry reported on "The transport protein BetP: A molecular switch (Das Transportprotein BetP: Ein molekularer Schalter)". The Institute of Organic Chemistry was represented by Bianca Seelig and her lecture on "Chemical strategies for the control of stem cell differentiation (Chemische Strategien zur Steuerung der Stammzelldifferenzierung)". Jonas Wiebke of the Institute of Theoretical Chemistry gave an introduction to his work on the "Hydration of trivalent actinoids (Hydratation der dreiwertigen Actinoide)". "The Liebig acid and the metal (Die Liebigsäure und das Metall)" was the title of the lecture Sonia Gomez-Torres, Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, held. The Institute of Physical Chemistry fielded Belinda Berns who reported on "Electrically conductive composite materials from polyurethane and ionic liquids (Elektrisch leitfähige Kompositmaterialien aus Polyurethanen und ionische Flüssigkeiten)".

The head of the Department presented the Advancement Award 2006 to Jonas Wiebke. The four other contenders were happy about a prize. For the first time students, whose their pre-diploma and diploma had been marked with grade 1,0, were honoured.

Special gratitude was expressed to Prof. Dr. Horst-Dieter Schüddemage of InfraServ Knapsack for the donation of the award money.

The Department Teaching Award which was conferred by the chemistry students' council for the second time was given to Prof. Hans-Günther Schmalz.
